Though I was escorted directly to the baggage screen area at O'Hare, that was NOT the case at BWI or LAS. At BWI the bag went onto a conveyor immediately after check in; at LAS I waited at the check in counter for 14 minutes, as requested.
Procedures do vary except one absolutely MUST contact a live airline agent and complete the form and place it in the bag if carrying a gun therein.
