Since an AR requires two hands (except Arnold Schwarzenegger) I wouldn't recommend occupying one hand holding a light during a threat situation. However, a handheld light is useful post threat for general illumination needs, inspecting injuries... that type of thing.

Sure. Light bouncing off the floor, ceiling and walls will generally light up a room well enough to identify friend or foe no matter what direction the light is pointed. Outside is a different matter.
