From memory, it seems like back in the 1915 time frame, periods were used on S&Ws a lot more than in later years:
S. & W.
U.S.A.
and of course "Smith & Wesson .455." as in the photo below.
All I can say is that things were more formal then(?) And that line was considered enough of a sentence to need a period(?)
