I think that is a very early post war box - the "S" serial number is a dead give away. Also, the pre war boxes were the hinged box (see below). As to value, I think it is probably worth in the $75 - $150 range (maybe a little more or less). When it comes to repairing it, let me know if you find a good way as I have several that are in the condition you present above.
