I have a hard time with this idea of a "field revolver".

If you're going handgun hunting, carry a revolver suitable for the game you are after. If you're taking a walk in the woods (in my case it would be in the desert) take your self defense carry revolver. What ever that last choice would be it will certainly be adequate for rabid, or even most unfriendly critters.
