If you've ever tried to takedown any Ruger before MK IV you'd know the advantage they have.
Typically, I've been reading lgs are stocked with the earlier Rugers that were traded for MK IV's. And the prices are way less than $400.
Too bad OP is "stuck" in CA.
Another plus over a MK III is NO Loaded Chamber Indicator.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a Ruger fan.

Both MK III's have disabled LCI's.
