I got the Model 54 Winchester many years ago. The moment it came to roost I began developing a stable of max .30-30 loads using spitzer bullets, figuring perhaps I could achieve low-end .300 Savage velocities.

Nothing doing! The rifle hasn't liked spitzers and gives an unimpressive accuracy performance with them. 125 grain, 150 grain, and 165 grain spitzer bullets of various styles have been tried. Varying the seating depth makes no difference.

The Hornady LeverRevolution bullet didn't give good accuracy either.

The rifle likes flat-nose bullets and that's all there is to it. 1 1/2-inches five-shot groups off the bench rest at 100 yards are doable when I'm in a shooting humor, with one "accidental" 1 1/4-inch 5-shot group saved to date.
