I'm pretty sure all 500 brass now use rifle primers.

I recommend 5744 for tame loads, but like others have said, this gun should be shot with true 500 mag loads. It's not too tough to manage the recoil. The biggest difference in the recoil is the large shove, which as long as you're not on your heels, you'll be fine.
