It's not uncommon to find S&W revolvers with shortened strain screws. That's one (incorrect) way some people reduce the trigger pull weight on them. The screw should be fully tightened in the frame for reliable primer ignition. Leaving the screw loose, or shortening it will cause light hammer strikes, often resulting in misfires.
