Les, I see you found my lost revolver! Been meaning to clean that guy up any day now.
It's been my observation that nearly anything with lubricating properties will work on handguns, one of my favorite lubes is automatic transmission fluid. Grease seems to work well on the slide. Ballistol, CLP and Hoppes #9 all clean just fine also. I bet Crisco or lard would also work in a pinch.
