However, I suspect with the guy shooting from within a room 32 floors up and 400 yards away, the crowd was responding much more to the cracks of the supersonic bullets going by then they were to the actual report of the rifle. But a quote like that will take on a life of it's own and be considered to be irrefutable fact.
