I have a 317 with 3" barrel and after market crimson trace grips. I want to love this gun but I don't. I find that the aluminum cylinder erodes too much. After a few hundred shots, erosion in the cylinder holes interferes with normal back and forth movement of cartridges. On firing, the empty case is pushed back against the recoil shield. Normally, the empty case would bounce off the recoil shield and move forward a bit. But with cylinder erosion the empty cases do not bounce forward again. The empties drag against the recoil shield which makes it difficult to cock for the next shot. When you get 3 or 4 cases dragging against the recoil shield you cannot cock again and the gun is totally jammed. Twice I have sent my 317 back to S&W for repair. Twice they replaced my cylinder. The second time I asked them to replace with a steel cylinder, but they gave me another aluminum cylinder. I don't shoot this gun very much now, because I don't want to have to send it back again.
