There were two lengths of rear sights on earlier K-frames. The first design had the mounting hole aligned closely with the barrel-cylinder gap and the FBI requested it be moved when they inspected a pre-production sample of the run of guns they ordered so the hole was moved back toward the rear of the frame somewhat.
