A gun from '86 would be in a cardboard box. The '96 gun, the box was plastic. Looking at the box is usually the easiest way at a glance. Dash numbers work, also, but for that you need to know the dates of the dash numbers.
Regarding the 4-digit Spec. Ord. number. S&W began using it in the early '80's. About 1983. But they don't use a 4-digit Spec. Ord. number any more. Beginning in 2013 S&W went to a 6-digit number. Hence, I asked about a 6-digit number and even gave and example of one: 042717. That example would be, of course, April 27, 2017. The new code is a lot easier to decipher.
