I think that 2nd and 3rd Gen hammers are interchangeable. However, 1st Gen hammers are not. The 2nd and 3rd Gen hammers are marked not for use in Model 39/59.

Only the 1st Gen have have a "half cock notch".

Again, that's my recollection.

There's a caveat to my preference. My long ago father, who taught me to shoot, had a Walther P-1, the altered post-war, alloy framed P-38. He taught me to catch the hammer with my off thumb while using the safety. Thus I lowered the hammer slowly as the mechanical dropper did its job.
From a mechanical standpoint, the process is probably unnecessary. It's just the way my dad taught me.
I'm older than I once was and more fondly remember his teachings. Now, when I handle my new carry gun (a recently acquired 469) I wish it had a spur hammer. I suppose some day I'll get one. Since the 2nd gen have a safety notch, I can't use a 3rd gen hammer (at least, I don't think I can), but maybe a 2G will come my way.
