The 29-2 has a recessed cylinder (~1.745") so that's part (~.045") of the difference in length.
Modern (non-recessed) 44 Mag cylinder are ~.030" longer than modern 45 Colt & 41 Magnum cylinders (~1.700" -vs- ~1.670").
Guess we just have to be glad that S&W was "nice enough" to make a few 45 Colt revolvers of us.
