If she likes the 317, then go for it. But I strongly suggest you get the 3" with adjustable sights for your stated purpose.
If you can find one, let her try a 4" Model 34. A little heavier, but a joy to shoot.

A couple of people have recommended the Charter Arms Pathfinder. Don't do it! I had one for a while. It felt good in my hand and the trigger was excellent. That's why I bought it. However, the damned thing wouldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside! Dumped it like a hot rock with no regrets.
