For versatility in almost any role - defense, target shooting, house gun, what have you, I'd have to pick a Smith Model 66 with a 4" barrel. Shoots everything from .38 Special wadcutters to hell-for-leather .357 Magnums. Easy to pack. Easy to maintain. Looks good. Feels good.
My pick of the Model 66 litter would be this dash one. Last of the elegant pinned and recessed 66s. Made in the old way in 1978, with hand fitting. I bought this one new in the box and had it treated to a great action job by Nelson Ford. It's one of the last guns I would ever part with.
