Most state police websites have a section dealing with recognition and reciprocity. If not, check the state AGs website. Print it out and have it available. Possibly check for knife limits. Many states officially view any blade over 3" as a deadly weapon.

Unloaded, locked case and ammo separate with all in the trunk covers you under interstate travel even without a permit.
