In those cases it might pay to do the following: unload the handgun and hose it down with WD-40. Wrap in saran-wrap or put it in a baggie and stuff it in the holster until the holster is dryish. That's the way we used to form holsters to the gun before fitted holsters became common.
Kinda depends upon age, condition & price of the holster and if you need the gun operable & available.
