So that the US military would carry the NATO 9mm round. No other reason. And, there are still US military units today that issue and carry a 1911 platform pistol.

Uh, no. What Gaston Glock DID do was to mass produce a pistol with an unsupported chamber design in order to make it feed reliably. A dangerous design that has resulted in numerous catastrophic failures. I've had two blow up in my hand. [/QUOTE]
