Even then, most counties in Texas have restrictions/limits on how much (or how little) land you must have to be able to shoot on it. In most locations where we've lived, the minimum was 10 acres, and even then, some counties have placed additional restrictions on recreational shooting or hunting. Obviously, home/self defense is a different matter.
When I was a kid, there seemed to be a lot of open land where you could go shoot...even at the city dump. Now about the only place you can go (unless you meet the land requirement) is a gun range, and plinking just isn't as much fun there.
