That ought to have been a simple and quick repair. File, gauge and fit the new extractor, and then use the correct spring to put the tension in the proper range. (The new ejector is a drop-in part.)
S&W no longer uses warranty/repair stations outside the factories, you might give this fellow a call. I know TX is a big state, but would it be worth a drive and overnight stay to have someone look at the 5906 who has been in the business of servicing and repairing them since 1979? I've never used him, of course, but he's been around for a while.
