Let me chime in with a perspective I have not seen elsewhere here.
I am basically a bullseye shooter. I learned the fundamentals that way and primarily compete that way. Handguns used to be designed and built around the ideals of that discipline.
The 6&1/2" barrel S&W 44 Special has an unmatched balance, handling and accuracy in a one-hand big bore revolver. (OK, the 38/44 Outdoorsman is right up there, too!). Doesn't matter which flavor: 1950 Target, Triple Lock, M24, etc.... All good!
The 4" 44 Special is nice, too, especially for packing. But, on the range or in the field, I love the way the front sight hangs on target, the clean break of that perfect trigger, the warm push of just the right amount of recoil, and.....whack! That big bullet nails it!
Yeah, I Love the M29, too. But, the balance and handling are better with the Special, especially if you are under the pressure of a match.
But why choose? Get both!

Best Regards,
Jim
