Protective paper

I frankly do not know, but if there was a shipping paper wrapping used by S&W back then it would not have been the VPI paper used today, as it did not exist.

Early wrappings that I have seen are just like the brown corrosion prevention papers paper except they were plain, with no printing. I think the printed brown paper did not show up until sometime after WWII. ebay has what they call "Grease Proof Onion Paper" used for Colt & S&W wrappings. Maybe someone has the history and timelines of box wrapping papers/

It's a thicker, oil absorbing beige paper.
