I knew I was paying a little too much for my 6.5" pre-27 (~$950 with incorrect S&W grips), but an extremely nasty dirty revolver cleaned up well, I found appropriate S&W targets and it ended up being my most accurate and favorite .357, and still is. If you aren't worried about selling it, paying a little too much won't concern you in the long run.
