Brownings "Other" .22
When shooters think of Browning semi-auto .22 rifles, they usually think of the classic SA.22. Light weight, bottom ejection, take down barrel.
People seem to forget Browning made another semi-auto .22 rifle, The BAR .22. Unlike the SA.22, the BAR was a full sized, blue steel and walnut rifle, with the iconic Auto-5 / BAR Centerfire receiver hump. Very well fit and finished, they were only made from 1977 thru 1985. A similar looking pump action version was also offered. The gun could be taken in half for cleaning via a take down screw on the left side of the receiver, similar to a Marlin model 39.
Mine was a nice rifle. !/2 inch or so at 50 yards with ammo it liked. Only complaints were a stiff trigger, and a tight fit all metal action that would become sluggish about every 100 rounds without cleaning or a squirt of Break Free.
Bought mine new in about 1980, and it killed its fair share of small game and tin cans before I traded it off on a Weatherby semi .22. The BAR .22 is still a good choice today for someone
looking for a quality man sized steel and walnut .22 semi-auto rifle.
