I prefer them for rubber .
Look closely at the places inside the grips that are keeping them from closing , try gently scraping away any rubber material that's in the way .
May be a little rubber flashing from the mould that needs removal .
I have used various shaped Exacto Knife blades to scrape / remove unwanted rubber ... go slow , and remove only whats necessary
