S.A. Micro Compact 45 smithing question
I have a Springfield Micro Compact 45 which is basically a slightly shrunk 1911 officers model. I'm trying to increase reliability with newer hollow points and other than the factory 6 round magazines. It's an anodized alloy (aluminum) frame and has a ramped barrel. I just polished the barrel ramp starting with 600 and finishing with 2000 grit paper.
I was about to polish the frame below the barrel which is kinda a pseudo-ramp as I've had a few rounds crash into that. But then I got to thinking that might be a mistake. Being aluminum it would polish up easily but would removing the anodizing coating there be a mistake?
It is already a bit shiny on the edge at the very top. I think it came that way. However, I don't want to make the metal softer there by removing the coating if that has potential to be an issue. Obviously I wouldn't be removing much metal, just enough to make it slick, but I expect the anodizing will be gone.
So what do you Smith smiths think?
I didn't put this in the smithing sub-forum as it's not a Smith.
