40 S&W pistols built on pistols designed for the 40, 10mm, or 45 ACP hold up very well. 40 S&W pistols built on platforms designed for 9x19 hold up well if the receiver is made of steel. The aluminum receivers seem to be the ones that wear out fastest, but that holds true for aluminum receiver pistols in larger calibers as well. Plastic receiver pistols also hold up well as the slide rails and impact surfaces are made of steel.
