I think the VE means value enhanced maybe? They are bare stainless slides. The others are stainless with melonite/armornite treatment which is a chemical hardening of the slide that side effect is blackening it.

Back in the Sigma days, the standard Sigmas had the Melonite finish and the Sigma 40V or 9V were bare stainless.
