Just so there is no confusion, the stocks on my .32-20 in post #4 above are newer than the gun. The walnut stocks with the dished gold medallions weren't available until c. 1910. The letter says this gun shipped from the factory with hard black rubber stocks.

Incidentally, some think those early black stocks were plastic. They were not.
