In the early seventies, I carried a Model 40 in the defogger pocket of an Army gas mask bag. I used the bag itself as sort of a purse, and wore the strap diagonally across my body, so that I never had to put the bag down. It also had a waist strap that could be used without changing the carry position of the bag, to provide increased security, mainly if climbing around in the woods. Access was fairly fast.
Ordinarily, such a bag might draw attention to itself, but I dressed slightly freaky, with one or two other elements that were MORE attention-getting and more innocent, and made the bag pretty much a non-noteworthy element of the whole package. It served me well in a fairly bad environment for three or four years.
