A couple of friends and I were out on the desert plinking with .22 pistols many years ago. I was carrying my very first handgun, a 6" Ruger first generation Standard semiauto.

One of them remarked that shooting inanimate objects like cans and bottles was too easy, and that not many could shoot objects thrown in the air well at all.

I had never tried that feat, but braggingly said that was a piece of cake - I could do it.

My challenge was accepted. In the back of my mind I realized that when an object is thrown in the air. the instant to shoot is at its apex - when it's at its highest and starts to come down. Simply aim directly under it.

So a beer bottle was thrown in the air, and I did exactly what I had figured out. One shot, and the bottle was busted in the air.

I put the safety on, re-holstered the gun after "blowing smoke" and continued to walk on. Got a lot of respect that day!
