Are they needed? I don't know, I'm no engineer. But they came with it, so I like to have them in place. And I doubt makers are spending any money on something that isn't needed.
I replaced the factory stocks with Nills, and their pins are tighter than two coats of paint.

Most any new S&W that came with wood or laminate wood grips will have the extra pins. It's something Altamont added for whatever reason. Any S&W already has the pin in the frame, and the extras are not really needed.
On a gun like the 2020 Python, they are needed.
