Hmmmm. Guess I never realized the roving J series was dreaded. Roys Jinks calls it the "roving J" so that's good enough for me.

I know the SCSW says it ranged from '71 to '72, but it actually started in about June '70 when the previous series reached J99999, and the higher numbers in the range overlapped with the following series through most of '73.

Quite a few limited run Chiefs (e.g., Model 36-1 Chiefs Special Target models with 3" barrels in the 1Jxxxx and 2Jxxxx range) didn't ship till '75 and '76. My own Model 36-1 3" 7J4619 (not a target model) shipped on April 16, 1976.

You might already know this, but here goes. The series had from one to three numbers before the J and from one to four after it. So it began with 1J1, after 1J9999 came 2J1, after 99J999 came 100J1, and so on, through -- as Absalom mentioned -- 999J99.
