In the military, "weapon" is widely used for small arms. Ditto also for sporting arms in Europe.
But many gun owners don't like the term, because they often see guns as collectibles or for target shooting or hunting.
I think many are afraid the mainstream media will seize the term in their quest to vilify all guns.
So the word upsets some here. That's all it amounts to.
