I replaced those grips with old J frame Magnas which are thicker and well rounded on the back side. Mine developed a smooth and lighter DA trigger over time. I shot it a lot at the range and carried many times. There are other alternatives for grips in rubber from S&W and Hogue that work very well to asorb recoil and do not hurt the hand like the factory Altamons.

Skippyjon, Thank you for sharing your experience with your 36-10. That is very helpful information to have. We will no doubt be looking into different grips. We have the model 66 with the stock rubber combat grips that we both really like shooting. Even though they don't look as good as the wood grips, they shoot better in our hands.
