I think I bought my first case ~1975. Ever since, there's been a back and forth between the economics of the current case price, do I shoot much of that load?, and my time, so there's been off and on again case buys between time is tight with good prices and having time and patience and lousy case prices.
During the Obama era factory ammo drought, I dragged out powder, primers and bullets I bought in the 70's, once again, "by the case"; i.e., boxes of 1,000 bullets, bricks of primers, powder by the 8lb keg, and reloaded to feed my hobby. As old as they were, all of it worked just fine.

Bulk buy just seems so convenient, whether factory ammo or components, both for lower unit cost and ease of storage.
