Just a couple smooth hardened bits of metal to take the waffle out. You could make it work with a pair of grade-8 nuts and use the smooth side of the nut as your jaw insert.
For older half-moon sight guns, I've used the shaft of a bolt to get a rounded profile down low during the squeeze. Usually you can see a slight localized deformation, but it's very subtle if done carefully.
