5946 VHM1015 dates to June 25, 1998 per SW
But best to check with SW - Guns marked with U can be odd - generally believed to be (a) new old stock, (b) contract item returned from original purchaser unused (unissued spares or unsold inventory - NYPD purchased guns and resold to officers), or (c) assembled from residual parts after contract ended.
In first 2 cases its probably 1998 - but I have a VJPxxxx 5946 that S&W dates "manufacture" to May 2009 which appears to be in the last category or maybe the second but refurbished somehow. Roy Jinks says original Ship Date was August 2013 so go figure. Box end date on mine is 011419 and Part number is 108186U.
S&W can give you a "manufacture" date and you can check ship date with Roy on thread below
