Default Why on earth are we defening our "need???"

In the past few months have watched, listened and lurked. One of the questions that keeps coming up is why does anyone need so-called "assault weapons" or "high capacity" (read: standard capacity) magazines?

This question has be beaten around the media over and over again.

My question is why are we even entertaining it?

Since when is America about only what we need?

Think of all the choices we make on a daily basis. Many of them go beyond basic needs and satisfy personal beliefs, wants and aesthetics.

One might need a car, but a Corvette? One needs shelter, but why a 3000 square foot home? One needs food... so why buy anything beyond bread and water (yeah, this example is quite silly)? Many people seek a spiritual connection. Why not just have one religion?

America has always been about personal liberty and choice. The Russians used pencils and grease pens in space. Paul Fisher designed a pen that would work in zero gravity. Was it a need?

For years, vacuum tubes ran electronics, until the transistor largely replaced them. Was it a true need?

I believe that America's freedom, America's insurance of liberty, America's GOD-GIVEN rights to make personal choices that go beyond mere need are what make this country so great. I believe that these personal choices are what put us at the forefront of the world and allowed this country to become the world leader that it is.

Our rights are not granted to us by a politician or a legislature. They are granted to us by the Divine Creator. These rights are enumerated and codified in a document that has kept this country great for over 200 years.

We are Americans. We do not simply answer a need. We go beyond and make choices that make sense for US. We go beyond good enough and stop at nothing short of great.

Please don't forget this. And don't get sucked into the "why do you need (fill in the blank)?"

It's not about need. It's about our God-given right to choose.

Hopefully, someone who is more eloquent than I will come up with a good response to the attack on our "needs."

Until then, I simply will not dignify the question with a response.

Every time the wife asks "Do you need that gun?" I reply "Need is such a silly word".

I understand what you are saying, but the answer to the question is easy.

I NEED a modern sporting rifle because they are currently the most effective self-defense tool that I am aware of. When they come up with something better, then I will NEED that.

If the argument goes past that, then ask them if it is a "Bill of Rights" or a "Bill of Needs."

I don't need them; I have a RIGHT to them and we NEED to defend that right. That's what all the discussion has been about.

Why does anyone need a hammer when you can pound a nail in with a rock?

As a matter of opinion there are lots of things I may feel that people don't "need," but I also have no business stopping anyone from owning something so long as they're responsible individuals who aren't misusing what they have.

Besides, I like not having to spend more time reloading magazines at the range than shooting targets, especially when I'm with friends or family. I also like the ergonomics and soft-shooting characteristics of the AR-15.

Ah, but there I go preaching to the choir... I usually have more success using the first argument when dealing with the "guns r bad, mmkay?" and "ZOMG! Scary black rifle!" crowd.

I've got all the 'needs' covered.........

It's the 'wants' that are on the front burner now

I ask them to define the word "need" and then tell I don't "need" anything. I "want" what I want.

Sadly I'm finding the biggest frustration with the gun owners who don't see the "need" for an AR or semi automatic even. The ones who own shotguns, rifles, revolvers, etc who are ok with a ban on AR's, magazine limits, semi auto, registration, etc. If they don't see the need to stand up with us then the general non gun owning population certainly won't.

Excellent, eschoendorff,

The Second Amendment does not 'give us' our gun rights - it was written in ink by our Founding Fathers to hold all powers (foreign and/or domestic) accountable for any infractions by others, or even our own government.

Ahh yes my favorite new subject, Who needs a ______?

Its a scary phrase and it shows just who they are!

These are the same folks that say, The rich don't pay their fair share and We need to help the middle class.

Now this is just a modernized version of From each according to their ability to each according to their need. Now if you keep this in mind and ask the original question of Who needs a _____?

Things start to fall into place...

Soon it will be the standard question for all aspect of your life. Oh you want to buy a car, who needs one with six cylinders? Perhaps some dim witted governor will stand up and shriek that no one needs a six cylinder engine to drive to work!

Then it will fall to your home, no one needs a single family home. A cold water flat in a six story walk up is all anyone needs. Who needs a private bathroom?

Who needs to earn more money than X per year...

Who needs two pairs of shoes...

Next we need to ask since we now can only get what its decided we need. Just who is going to be doing the deciding for us?

Perhaps I am taking this a bit to far but once we ask who needs and allow the government to decide for us we are on our way to the end of things as we know it.

Now if I can start my next new favorite topic of the buzz word greed. You know working hard trying to get ahead, thats greed. Providing goods and services that people want and need while making a profit, thats greed. I wont bore you with more of this.

However, add "Who needs" and "Greed" and you are well on your way to a "workers paradise"

Scary times indeed...
