Default NC Senator Richard Burr

I just read an article in the Raleigh News and Observer (a notoriously left leaning, anti-gun organization). It says that Senator Burr, the senior senator and chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, supports the "no fly, no buy" legislation. This legislation, proposed by the emotion operating, anti-gun members of congress, smacks of 1933 Germany in its creation of a secret list with no set criteria for inclusion, maintained by some nebulous bureaucrats that can deny citizens their rights.

They claim that citizens who are denied will be able to appeal. The issue is that one will not even know if they are on the list unless they try to exercise their constitutional rights. How much will it cost, how long will it take and how onerous will it be to show that an honest citizen has been wronged by some incompetent bureaucrat?

I would ask all NC members to contact Senator Burr and oppose this ill advises, emotion filled, void of reason/common sense, legislation.

Unfortunately I believe Burr was voted in as the lesser of two evils. A lot of these circus monkeys make it in that way.

Sad but true.

I'd support the general concept, except just about any one can end up on a no fly list for pretty much no reason - and has no way to get off the list if a mistake has been made.

Let's not forget the regular occurrence of someone's 18 month old, 4 year old or 8 year old, etc child being pulled off a plane for being on a no fly list. As I parent, I get "toddler terrorism" but this isn't what the no fly list is supposed to be about.

Unfortunately, even in these clearly mistaken examples it still takes years to get off the list.

This of course means that it becomes just another method of de facto gun control with no clear due process to ensure those on the list really constitute a threat or to ensure that those put on the list through administrative error are quickly removed from the list.

Definitely call your congressman and voice your opposition to this.

As I understand it, no one reveals how someone makes it onto the "No Fly" list, those on the list do not even know they are on it until they try to fly, and then there is virtually no way to get off the list. Sounds like the makings of a sure-fire means to prevent anyone from buying a firearm.

Due process is a cornerstone to our judicial system. Those who support secret lists and the denying of civil rights for nothing more than a hunch need to be looked at as enemies of our democratic way of life. I have no problem denying gun ownership to terrorists and traitors, but they need to first be identified, charged and convicted.

Speak out against the wrong politician, and find your name on the no buy list.
Next step, they come around to collect the weapons you already own.
Kind of like getting your taxes audited for being on the "wrong side", or saying the wrong thing!

Best,
Rick

If you can lose a constitutional right based on a being on a list and having no due process, why not suspend their right to vote, freedom of speech, etc etc.

I am against terrorist being allowed to buy guns as the next guy, but, I do believe that losing a right should involve more than being place on a list with no trial, no jury, no facing your accusers etc

Burr voted along party lines. Voted for two and against two. The senate apparantly still does not get it that secret lists are bad. They can't see how they led to disaster in Nazi Germany and during the McCarthy era. They put forth a law to allow people to appeal if they are denied. The appeal is in federal court. Federal courts are notoriously difficult to navigate and many people do not live near a federal courthouse to file the appeal or attend a hearing.

A person would most probably have to hire an expensive lawyer to prove they should not have been on a secret list, put there by an unknown bureaucrat for an unknown reason. SO basically it is the "Outrageously Expensive Lawyer Relief Act of 2016."

Am I just ignorant or does anyone else see this is the beginning of a long slide down a slippery slope?

Any of these new laws are going to end up going to the Supreme Court for a ruling on their constitutionally. We have just got to hope the ruling goes in favor.

Just google your own name, you will find some criminal with the same name. Your name could be on the list and your rights are denied and you have no due process to make the government prove its you and not him!
We are free in name only! We now have serial dictators and soon they will be permanent dictators.

Unfortunately,(my) Senator Susan Collins introduced this unimaginably bad pile of ****.

I've e-mailed her several times to explain just how badly this could AND WILL be abused. Member of the NRA, SAF, GOA ,etc.?
Too politically right therefor too scary to be trusted.

Of course no response from the #$%^&* !@#$

ETA She's a "Leading Republican" from Maine.

The notion of having varied levels of rights for citizens is such a perversion of our system. Some people can fly, some can't, no reasons given. Some retired people are granted nation-wide CCW rights, the rest of us, even those of who've kept our noses clean for 60 years and even served in the military have no such rights. And now they want varied 2nd amendment rights pertaining to purchasing firearms based on secret lists. We're headed down a slippy slope.

Here in NC, the concealed carry laws for the common citizen differ from the laws of some elected officials. Here certain judges, attorneys, clerks of court and others are allowed to carry in most places that are posted no firearms. This basically creates separate classes of people and rights. Do they really think their life and safety are more important than mine?

Any adult who is not locked up can get a gun.

This, and ALL GUN CONTROL, do nothing but harass the citizenry. It is NOT POSSIBLE to keep someone from getting a gun. It is juvenile to pretend that it can.

"no fly, no buy" is cute nonsense.

Excellent point, Ballistic147. The lesser of evil is always evil; hence, conservatives refusal to vote for Romney in '12. I think the GOP has gotten the message: the lesser evil will no longer work for conservatives. Had the GOP forced another neocon down our throats, Hillary would be the putative 45th President of the United States. Thankfully, that ain't the case in '16, which is driving neocons up a wall they can't climb.

The no fly list from what I read is made of mostly of foreign nationals, which begs the question - why are they even allowed in the country?
