John, keep us updated. I think that you would be a great choice for that position, and would enthusiastic support you.

I was kinda hoping that I would be appointed the new Director. I was planning to relocate the National Headquarters to the Minden/Gardnerville area here in Douglas County, Nevada.
In 1968 there was to be a 90 day amnesty period for people to register any unregistered NFA firearms. The registration period was opened and closed after only 30 days. What the heck happened to the last 60 days? I want the last 60 days opened for registration. It is only fair.

I have a copy of "Unintended Consequences" that I treasure. It should be required reading for all gun owners and wanna-be politicians - as a lesson and a warning.

John Ross as head of the BATFE would go down as one of the most epic appointments in the history of this country. And if G.G. were alive, she'd agree.

Any word on this? I have heard that Trump may close down the BATFE. Either way good luck!

No, it isn't. I want the Hughes Amendment repealed, NOW! I want suppressors, SBRs, and SBSs, at a minimum, removed from the NFA if we can't get an outright repeal of the NFA of 1934!
"Be more like Canada!" the #gunsense morons whine. In Canada regular citizens can buy 12 gauge manually-operated shotguns with barrels as short 8.5 inches.
I'd love to have the Dominion Arms Chinese Remington 870 clone (or a REAL Remington 870) 12 gauge with 8.5 inch barrel and a 5 round box magazine with a 5 position AR stock. Watch the #gunsense morons go crazy! "But it's just like Canada!"

Yeah, like that would ever happen.
A head of a federal agency who actually has extensive practical knowledge and experience in the field that the agency is charged with regulating?
Come on, get real! What's next? Common sense in government?!?

John Ross as director of BATFE
That would be the hoot to end all hoots. Only things that I can think of that would ring better are as follows:
1. Immediate repeal of The Hughes Amendment.
2. Ditto for Gun Control Act of 1968.
3. Ditto for NFA of 1934.
4. Ditto for any other federal legislation I might have overlooked.
5. Ditto for any state or local legislation adversely impacting on constitutional rights.
6. Capitol punishments for anyone found guilty of the criminal use or arms, firearms especially.
7. Criminal prosecution of ATF agents for their transgressions, planting false evidence, making false statements, that is lying under oath, that sort of thing, just like the ordinary citizen would be prosecuted.
I'm not planning to hold my breath waiting for any or all of the above mentioned to take place, but please allow me to dream as I like, for I would allow others the same largess.

I won't list all the changes I would like, but here are the top three:
1. Repeal the Hughes Amendment.
2. Open the last 60 days of the amnesty.
3. Modify the 1968 GCA to allow the importation of C&R NFA firearms for sale to collectors.

the whitehouse.gov petition to have the 1986 Hughes amendment repealed came up 1,971 signatures short of the 100,000 required to put it in front of the President... hope everyone complaining signed it...

Re the new or extended amnesty sometimes mentioned, the short periods of time referenced simply will not do. In my not so humble opinion, this registry business should be scrapped in its entirety. As for reopening the thing, a period of 6 months, combined with the widest possible publicitywould be the absolute minimum. Nothing less would even begin to suffice, unless one subscribed to the idea that the individual is the servant of government, a premise that I would reverse to read that it is government that is the servant of the citizen.

When and where was this petition circulated, or available for signing? Seems that the requisite publicity was lacking, or am I missing a point or points of interest?

My argument to the Office of the President has been that their are probably large numbers of unregistered full auto weapons in the Country. Wouldn't everyone be better off, including the antis, in knowing who has these guns and where they are? At the very least the amnesty period needs to be re-opened.

whitehouse.gov is where many pro-gun, anti-gun and just about any petitions anyone can think of are posted...
google we the people petitions or just go to...
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/
you have to scroll thru a lot of silly... but if change is wanted... this is a good way to start... you can even start your own... I found out about it here on another thread...

No. The second amendment is there for a reason, and it isn't to inform the government or anyone else who has common military weapons. Every competent citizen SHOULD have a few. I'm perfectly happy that some patriotic citizens have held on to their preferred military weapon, even though I am more impressed by output measured at the morgue than measured at the muzzle.
Repeal the NFA, and imprison public officials who violate the Constitution by use of force or threatened force.
