My son has lived in Alabama for five years, to the day, and I've seen the gun laws, friendly to begin with, improve quite a bit.
First recognition of all states licenses, then legislative recognition of open carry, then the five year license, and not many restricted carry areas.
Sadly, he is moving his family to South Carolina in the coming months. Big promotion, but a move is required.
SC is no where near as friendly to out of state gun owners. Reciprocity only for other state resident permits, will only issue non resident permits unless you own property in the state. This bill would change that, which is good for me.
I'm generally opposed to the federal government sticking it's nose into this sort of thing, but I'll make an exception if it benefits me.
Seriously though, it would be better if all states did this voluntarily. The same goes for shall issue. They aren't likely to like what the Congress or SCOTUS are going to force on them.
I also keep in mind that if Justice Thomas had his way, McDonald v Chicago would have been decided on the 14th Amendment "Privileges or Immunities" clause and not as it was. Privileges of Immunities has been dead since the Slaughterhouse case in the early 1870s. Still Thomas would have revived it and used it to force Chicago to allow guns in public housing.
As I posted earlier, there is at least one potential case before SCOTUS that could decide shall issue once and for all.
Time will tell.
