OPEN CARRY/CONCEALED CARRY
According to the news in my local paper today the state of South Carolina may pass a bill for Open Carry w/o a permit.

Texas passed open carry for those with a CCL but I really have yet to see anyone open carrying. Personally I think open carry is asking for problems. I do agree it is our constitutional right though.

I think that was concealed carry w/o a permit. SC doesn't allow open carry in general.

I prefer concealed carry. I want to see the look on the criminal's face when he is starring down the barrel of the gun and know what he's thinking. "Oh, shot."

True. If you open carry, you may never get to see that look. But I digress . . .

I just tried reading the proposed revisions to the SC state firearms statutes, and it seems there are a bunch of changes. Best I could tell, It looks like they are simultaneously attempting BOTH open-carry and constitutional-carry.

I lived for over 60yrs in Az and NM , I saw a lot of open carry . I open carried for quite a few yrs when it was not necessary to have a permit . Open carry has stopped a few criminals , so I have read . I have been personally thanked numerous times , even by LEO'S and retired LEO's .

This is the markup that made me think they were abolishing the concealment requirement (agree it's a difficult read), where all the text following the words "greatest dimension" are crossed out (I underlined the deleted section).
I'm going to need a refresher course if the final statutes aren't clearer than the proposed amendments.
SECTION 9. Section 23-31-210(5) of the 1976 Code, as last amended by Act 347 of 2006, is further amended to read:
"(5) 'Concealable weapon' means a firearm having a length of less than twelve inches measured along its greatest dimension that must be carried in a manner that is hidden from public view in normal wear of clothing except when needed for self-defense, defense of others, and the protection of real or personal property."

I recently saw my first OC. The guy in front of me asked the cashier their store policy on OC. The guy said that young guy surely is illegally open carrying. The guy carrying seemed to only be bothering the guy on front of me and he said he himself had his CCL. I thought dude what business is it of yours to make an assumption if the guy was illegally carrying. Just because he was a young man in his 20's was no reason to draw attention to him and stating he was surely illegally carrying. IMO The kid wasn't the problem maker.
Turned out the "kid" had his CCL and was x military and worked security. He did like to talk cow patty but he was legally carrying.

Open carry has been ok in Idaho for long time, but I haven't observed
very many doing it. Last July 1st it became legal to carry concealed,
but I haven't noticed any difference, except not many want to pay for
concealed carry training now.

I truly hope the good folks of SC are allowed to carry the way that suits each one the most.
I's jest really enjoy all the friendly banter here over CC vs OC........
Having done both at the same time most of my adult life and not
havin been targeted to be the first shootin victim of a bandit or isis terrorist.....
I'm at a loss here. Gees, I did not know that was such a common occurrence.

There's a variety of opinion regarding open carry, but one universal truth is that all the handwringing and predictions of doom fizzle out once a state legalizes open carry. With few exceptions, gun owners do well with thier freedoms and have proven it time after time.

As Stan and Reg so eloquently debated before the People's Front of Judea; it's not about having the ability to carry but having the right to carry.
