Second Amendment News: The Hearing Protection Act
After a promising beginning and progress through Congress, it now appears H.R.367, the Hearing Protection Act of 2017, has been shelved indefinitely.
House Speaker Paul Ryan states that there are now no plans to advance the bill, even though a House panel had backed the bill just last month, and legislators had been expected to move forward on the bill.
Speaker Ryan added that he doesn't know when the bill will be scheduled for further action, but apparently doesn't see that happening any time in the near future...possibly not this year.
On a more hopeful note, Speaker Ryan says that if people are expecting this Congress to infringe upon Second Amendment rights, that "isn't going to happen."

I am not surprised. I was in a shop this morning and my friend took orders for three suppressors. Seems that people waiting for the HPA have given up.

I suspect that bill failed late Sunday evening in Las Vegas. Never hurts to call your Representative, though . . .

Statements made to the effect that the shooter might have done even more damage with a suppressor is of course a lie. Suppressors as I expect most here know only work effectively with subsonic ammunition and the rifles being fired were high power examples.

...and unfortunately, perception IS reality for the uninformed masses, even when there is in reality no actual linkage between the two.
I have to wonder if that is the reason this totally inappropriate public statement was made at the time that it was. Associating suppressors with what happened in Las Vegas, seems like a strategic way to stop or stall this bill - or any pro 2A bill - from moving forward.
With the willing media to carry the anti-gun message, what politician is going to support deregulation of suppressors when this tragedy is so fresh in everyone's mind? Especially when the usual outspoken anti-gun spokespeople are attempting to falsely link suppressors to a gun-related tragedy?

And the antis accomplished exactly that. According to P. Ryan the suppressor bill has been tabled for now.

Of course. These anti-2A politicians may be soul-less and corrupt, but they aren't stupid. The one who made the aforementioned statement trying to link suppressors to the Las Vegas tragedy was once touted as "the smartest woman in the world" - remember?

The 2nd amendment is, has been, and will probably always be under some form of attack.
I was disappointed, to say the least, that they tabled the HPA vote.
It sets a bad precedent.

They did not want to pass it to begin with, or it would have sailed through to Trump's desk. LV is just what they are using to justify shafting the gun owners, and go back on promises.

I hope you're wrong, and early reports said it was probably going to happen.
That's what's disappointing.

We are pretty lenient on thread drift on most topics.
That is not the case here in the 2A Forum. The 2A forum has a very specific purpose.
It has always been explained here-
Sticky: READ this > HOW to use the 2A Forum
Stay on topic in 2A threads.

For me, it's particularly troubling when I read that Paul Ryan who is NRA endorsed, NRA rated A+ and reportedly the recipient of $6,000 from the NRA in 2016, has shelved the suppressor legislation.

It should have been passed early in the first session. Nine months have passed, and the bill still not on the presidents desk.

Activity for the days congress was in session 2017.
