Will this slow me down too much or is the safety consideration worth it?
As a match director, I'd like to emphasize this TWICE.

If the the holster has a retention device, it MUST be used.

Many newcomers to an IDPA match start leaving the retention strap open because they realize they are giving away a couple of seconds, and that is a safety violation.

Also, there is NO additional safety factor for a typical unfitted holster with a retention strap to a fitted holster without one. With a proper fitted holster, the shooter can be very active.

Finally, NO IDPA course of fire should be designed to require reholster after the gun is drawn, until the string is finished and the timer is stopped. Once you draw, you do the string of fire with the gun drawn.

Unless you can't afford a proper fitted holster, I'd rather you didn't show up with a cheap unfitted holster with a strap.
