Default Federal Champion

Whenever the wife goes to Walmart, maybe once or twice a month, I try to stop by the sporting goods section just to check out the ammo selection. Its funny to hear the old guy behind the counter ask, "Can I help you with anything?", I always answer: "Just making sure you don't have any ammo".
Well, I was there the other day and to my surprise they did have some ammo. I buy the usual calibers, .38 special, .357, and .40 when I see them for a decent price. They had a 50 round box of Federal Champion .40 for $13.97 and the shelf was full of it, maybe 3 cases . I asked the guy about why they had this brand and furthermore why there was some on the shelf? He said that they had been getting more and more of it in but that was all he knew. I told him I usually see Winchester as their target load, but with the way things have been i'm sure people will take almost anything.
I can't say that i've ever seen Federal Champion before, I looked it up on their website, they just say:
• Champion®: For your time at the range target shooting with your favorite handguns.

I haven't had a chance to shoot any of it yet but what does everyone think?

I don't buy factory ammo but if I did I would only buy Federal. Reason, it is loaded with with Federal primers which is the only primer most of my guns will ignite.

I use Federal Champion .45 Colt 225 grain LHP. It's accurate, clean-burning, and relatively cost-effective. I don't use a lot of it as I restrict it to a carry versus a practice load, but I think it's good stuff.

The local Wal-Mart has had Blazer Brass, Federal, Remington, and Winchester in 45ACP & 9mm Luger. All the mentioned brands have appeared in stock at one time or the other this year. The local gun shops have plenty of ammunition but the prices are substantially higher than Wal-Mart.

Would that Wal-Mart would have the ammo described here W of the Cascades! The shop/ranges are knocking off folks for $20 per 50 9X19, $35 per 50 .45ACP. Insert favorite FMJ target load brand here{ }.

Friend, don't you feel too bad, as here in the boonies of PA (Pure Apalachia) prices are still high and availability is spotty (at best). All the while, I have to listento my shooting buds in Philly and Pittsburgh (only about 150 miles either way) rave about the availability and price at near pre-Obamanation days.

Default Range Report

I made it to the range today, good ammo at a good price. Federal Champion is pretty good, just a shade on the dirty side but that was to be expected.

I've had good luck with Federal Champion ammo, my 646 eats it like it's going out of style. Seems to shoot about the same as winchester target.

Picked up a few boxes of 9mm for $9/50! Can't beat that price. I will try to get back with a range report soon.

Thumbs up

The 9mm is actually pretty clean, no issues feeds, fires, and ejects 100%

The .40 sw is a little dirtier, but not as dirty as WWB in my opinion. They load pretty hot for range ammo, so it operates really well. No failures.

I shot some 9mm this past weekend. Had it loaded in magazines mixed with PMC and WWB. All of them went bang and put holes in the target. Can't complain. I've always liked Federal ammo.

My M&P40 definitely likes the Federal Champion. When I first bought it, I put 50 rds through it with decent groups at 25 yds.

Switched to WWB for the next two mags and all the hits moved to the far left of the target. Not one close to the center until I started aiming for the right side of the target...
