Are there any special rules about shipping ammo? Can I just use priority Mail ? I want to ship a few boxes of 38 special.

It is illegal to ship live ammo thru the US mail. You must use a common carrier such as Fedex or UPS.

Box must be clearly marked ORM-D small arms ammunition. Sometimes the shipper has pre-printed labels.

Or you can print them off this website

The same as any other similar size and weight package, just look at the UPS web site for their rate chart.

If going to a commercial address you will avoid the "Residential Address" added delivery fee of around $2.00 IIRC.

You might double check the address carefully, though. I once sold 1,000 rounds of ammo off this forum's classifieds and the buyer gave me his work address. It wound up being a public high school and while not exactly illegal it really pissed me off that he didn't tell me. The box sat in the office for two days before he took it home, marked with ORM-D labels.

This is a good link to know!
I made up labels to mimick these AND as long as it states the small arms ammunition along with the ORM-D and are taped to the package in several locations I've had no problems with UPS accepting my packages.

Perhaps $10 or so. I've gotten burned a few times shipping ammo, because I never check the shipping fees online Some packages were assessed " fuel delivery surcharges" because the recipients lived in very rural locales, off the beaten path. The clerk at UPS even mentioned that "these folks must live in the boonies", because there was an extra 2-4 dollars added on to the normal delivery charge.

I just got a UPS account and told them to come pick it up and bill me. It is what it is. I'm going to lose money on this, but thats what I get for buying +p when the gun is to old to shoot it. UPS is going to pick it up today.

Just my 2 cents if it helps anyone.
I sometimes use a local FFL that I do business with to ship or get ammo. He knows the costs involved, handles packageing and most of the time if it's not much he doesn't even charge me.
